In late fall 2012, the journal Children, Youth and Environments will publish a special issue on the role of physical environments in putting children at risk of violence, in reducing risks of violence, and in creating places of security, refuge and healing. In addition to research articles, the journal carries Field Reports: short articles of about 3,000 words which describe innovative initiatives to improve environments for children and youth—in this case, by reducing risks of violence or creating places of safety and healing. 

Submissions deadline:   October 15, 2012.

 The European Society for Prevention Research  will hold its 3rd International Conference and Members’ Meeting: Common risk and protective factors, and the prevention of multiple risk behaviours.  -  The aims are  to highlight the importance of prevention work and promote research on interventions with multiple behavioural and mental health outcomes.

The research initiative has been designed to improve the self-assessment capacities of cities and communities as the basis for planning, advocacy and community action to improve the living conditions of children. For the purpose, the research team (IRC and CERG) developed tools for communities and local authorities, which can easily be adapted to different contexts.

IRC has partnered with DevInfo in the development of the CFC DevInfo assessment and monitoring toolkit. This is designed to help implementing countries automate database management on Child Friendly Cities (CFC). It is based on the CFC assessment toolkit and indicators developed through the CFC research initiative (http://www.childfriendlycities.org/en/research). It comprises: (a) community assessment indicators (derived from the CFC community assessment tools) and (b) CFC objective indicators (derived from other administrative surveys). The toolkit consists of DevInfo templates and Data Capture sheets. The DevInfo templates and Data Capture sheets can be customized and managed by cities or countries that wish to collect data on children's living conditions and child well-being in local settings.

Evidence Aid and the Belgian Red Cross – Flanders are organising the 2nd Evidence Aid Conference on 29-30 October 2012. It will be held at the Novotel Hotel, Brussels Airport, Belgium. The overarching theme is ‘Disaster Aid’, in which we will focus on priority setting  and the levels of evidence that should be regarded as acceptable or required for people involved in disaster risk reduction, planning, response and recovery.
