Roseline September

Roseline September is a Professor in the Department of Social Work, the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences, at the University of the Western Cape. She has developed and sustained productive professional relationships and networks with both government and non-governmental organizations. These include national and provincial government departments, the National Programme of Action for Children's Steering Committee (NPA), international agencies and the Office on the Rights of the Child in the Presidency. She contributes extensively to legislation and policy research processes in the country.

Since the birth of South Africa's democracy she served on national and provincial transformation task teams. For example, the National White Paper on Welfare and law reform processes with the SA Law Commission especially those pertaining to children, youth and families. A commitment to the values of Human Rights and Children Rights supports her work.

Prof. September is actively involved in the field of social development broadly and strategies toward poverty reduction in particular. She was centrally involved in the processes that led to the review and transformation of development facilitation institutions such as the IDT and the establishment of the National Development Agency. She was appointed as a member of the Board by the Minister of Finance and chaired the Board for three years and was also the Chairperson of the Policy and Research Committee until 2003.

As a full-time professor at the university, she teaches, conducts research, publishes and supervises students and practitioners in the areas of social policy research, development studies, child welfare policy, youth and child protection. She serves the University in a number of committees.

Her research interest and practice are primarily in policy research and the utilization of research as an instrument for transformation, social change and social justice. She received an award for the best researcher in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences, University of the Western Cape.

Prof. September's management experience, leadership and organizational skills include: The leadership and management of national, provincial and multi-disciplinary and intern-sectorial organizations and teams from diverse backgrounds and skill levels. She has the ability to work most effectively with all levels of governance and civil society groups. She has hosted successful workshops, seminars and conferences. On an international level, the latter have contributed to global debates and advocacy development.
