The Government of Brazil, ECPAT International, UNICEF and the NGO Group to the Convention on the Rights of the Child are preparing for the World Congress III against Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents to be held in Rio de Janeiro from 25-28 November 2008. The Unicef Innocenti Research Centre are playing an active part in preparing for the thematic sessions of the Congress.
The World Congress III is an important opportunity to renew global commitment to combating sexual exploitation of children and to galvanize international will and support for the concrete action required to guarantee the right of children and adolescents to be protected from sexual exploitation. The Congress will also provide an opportunity to assess progress and review emerging trends in order to adjust and refine the conceptual and practical tools that will be used to combat the commercial sexual exploitation of children at the global level, as well as define measurable targets that can be achieved through a more empathic focused and concerted effort.
27 - 29 August the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre will be facilitating the South Asia Preparatory Consultation to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal. The gathering is being hosted by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare in Nepal, in close collaboration with the South Asia Forum (SAF) and the South Asia Coordinating Group against Violence against Children (SACG). The aim is to ensure that the issues and challenges relevant to South Asia are appropriately reflected in the proceedings and follow-up mechanisms of the November 2008 World Congress III against Sexual Exploitation of Children. The consultation will also make linkages with ongoing regional processes and initiatives geared towards combating violence against children.
The official web site of the World Congress III against Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents gives thorough information on the event and its organizers.
