New Information Sheet: Play and the Early Years

Written by Janet Moyles this information sheet explores what is play and its importance to and for children’s development in the early years (birth to seven years old). It also explores the importance of adult roles, advocacy and the child’s right to play

It aims to help parents, families and those working with children in this age group in developing a positive attitude to play.

Janet Moyles is Emeritus Professor of Education at Anglia Ruskin University and an early years/primary specialist and consultant, particularly in the areas of play, learning and practitioner research. Her books include Just Playing?, The Excellence of Play and Effective Leadership and Management in the Early Years.

The production of this information sheet has been funded by the Welsh Government to support the developments arising from the Play Sufficiency Assessments completed by each local authority in Wales. Section 11 of the Children and Families (Wales) Measure 2010 places a duty on local authorities to assess and secure sufficient play opportunities for children in their area.
