The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Maastricht is looking for a Post-doc candidate to work on a research program on the effects of transnational child-raising arrangements between Ghana and The Netherlands. Maastricht University coordinates the study and collaborates with the University of Ghana . The deadline for submitting an application is September 29, 2011.

The Children and Violence Evaluation Challenge Fund aims at reducing violence against children by funding quality evaluations of violence prevention and child protection interventions in low- and middle-income countries. It is a pooled funding initiative by the Bernard van Leer Foundation, Oak Foundation and UBS Optimus Foundation, hosted by Network of European Foundations. The deadline for the concept notes submission is 7 October 2011.

The Innocenti Research Centre (IRC) of UNICEF in Florence (Italy) invites young researchers to submit proposals for visiting fellowships ranging from 4 – 6 months in research areas related to UNICEF’s mission and to the research agenda of the IRC. When selected, the young researchers will be invited to join the IRC in Florence for a period of 3 to 6 months.

Deadline for submitting the research proposal: 10 September, 2011.

Violence against young children is often hidden from view when it takes place in the home and the family. Articles in this issue of Early Childhood Matters explore the need for good data on how many children are affected (the best current guess is somewhere between 133 and 275 million children globally), and for better evidence about what works to tackle violence in the home.

The African Child Policy Forum and Defence for Children International are jointly organising an action oriented Global Conference entitled “Deprivation of Children’s Liberty as the Last Re-sort” and aimed at contributing to the improvement of laws, policies, systems and procedures in Child Justice in Africa. The conference will take place in Kampala, Uganda 7th and 8th November 2011.

A new portal focused on links between business and children’s rights has been launched by the non-profit Business & Human Rights Resource Centre. This joint initiative by UNICEF, UN Global Compact and Save the Children aims to develop a set of principles offering concrete guidance on what business can do to respect and support children’s rights. The draft principles are open for public comment until 15 July 2011.

Today, around the world, there are 5 million young men and women living with HIV. Opportunity in Crisis: Preventing HIV from early adolescence to young adulthood examines the state of the HIV epidemic among young people, highlighting the challenges they face and presenting solutions informed by evidence of what works with different age groups and in different epidemic settings. The report outlines key steps towards building a continuum of HIV prevention that can help keep children HIV-free as they develop into young adults.
