Following the release of two new reports which document violations and abuses of children in state-run homes, OHCHR and UNICEF today launched a campaign to end the practice of sending children under the age of three into state-run institutional care.

Articles in this issue of Early Childhood Matters explore the need for good data on how many children are affected (the best current guess is somewhere between 133 and 275 million children globally), and for better evidence about what works to tackle violence in the home.

Call for papers
A new portal focused on links between business and children’s rights has been launched by the non-profit Business & Human Rights Resource Centre. This joint initiative by UNICEF, UN Global Compact and Save the Children aims to develop a set of principles offering concrete guidance on what business can do to respect and support children’s rights. The draft principles are open for public comment until 15 July 2011.

Today, around the world, there are 5 million young men and women living with HIV. Opportunity in Crisis: Preventing HIV from early adolescence to young adulthood examines the state of the HIV epidemic among young people, highlighting the challenges they face and presenting solutions informed by evidence of what works with different age groups and in different epidemic settings. The report outlines key steps towards building a continuum of HIV prevention that can help keep children HIV-free as they develop into young adults.
