- COMMITTEE ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD: New members elected On 18 December, States met in New York to elect nine members to serve on the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. The successful candidates will replace those whose term will expire on 28 February 2013. The nine candidates elected to the CRC are from: Austria, Bahrain, Brazil, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Italy, Malaysia, Russia, and Slovakia. Read more...
- The Mental Disability Advocacy Centre is hiring for a two-year project entitled “Access to Justice for Children with Mental Disabilities”. One of MDAC’s six human rights goals is access to justice. MDAC has been given a grant of 1million EUR from the European Commission carry out a two-year project entitled “Access to Justice for Children with Mental Disabilities”. Deadline 21 January 2013. - European Master in Social Work with Families and Children. This Erasmus Mundus MFAMILY is a two year master programme of 120 ECTS. Students will spend a semester each in Lisbon, Stavanger and Gothenburg before moving to the desired partner institution to work on their master’s thesis. The language of instruction for the programme is English. Upon completion of the programme, students will be awarded a joint degree by the consortium. Read more...

- Identifying and Recognising the Needs of Young Carers – New Questionnaire and Screening Tool. The Young Carers Research Group has launched a new questionnaire and screening tool to help researchers and health, social care and education professionals estimate the prevalence of young carers in a given area and to identify their needs. - Child and Youth-centred Accountability: a Guide for Involving Young People in Monitoring and Evaluating Child Protection Systems. Child-Centred Accountability and Protection Evaluation (CAPE) is a multiinstitutional pilot project focused on assessing how the impact of child protection services and programs addressing sexual abuse and exploitation can be measured and evaluated from a child-centred perspective. - The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: A Study of Legal Implementation in 12 Countries. UNICEF UK has published The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: a study of legal implementation in 12 countries, which looks in countries beyond the UK in order to compile evidence of the most effective and impactful ways of embedding children’s rights into domestic law. The 12 countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden) were chosen to demonstrate the variety of ways in which different places have provided for children’s rights at the national level by taking steps to implement the Convention. The research was led by Professor Laura Lundy, Director of the Centre for Children’s Rights at Queen’s University Belfast ( www.qub.ac.uk/ccr), collaborating with Professor Ursula Kilkelly at University College Cork. - Urban Inequalities - Accepted in "Addressing Inequalities" Global Thematic Consultation - Call for Proposals for Background Papers Oct 2012. Urban dwellers in low- and middle-income nations are on average better off than those in rural areas – healthier, better educated, better housed, with more livelihood opportunities. This rural-urban distinction has encouraged a focus on rural poverty as the most compelling development concern. But it can be a misleading dichotomy. The reassessment of objectives within post-2015 debates is a chance to recognize these disparities and the associated injustices as integral to addressing our commitment to a better world. - School Management and Decision-making in Ethiopian Government Schools: Evidence from the Young Lives Qualitative School Survey. The Working Paper 86 examines the extent to which the involvement of different stakeholders in schools (teachers, headteachers, parents, students, local government administration, etc.) impacts upon critical decision-making at school level. The paper uses qualitative data collected as part of the recent Young Lives school-based research from five of the 20 sentinel sites. Specifically it uses data collected through in-depth interviews with teachers and headteachers. Read more...

This paper describes the outcomes of an expert consultation on The Structural Determinants of Child Well-being hosted by the UNICEF Office of Research. The two-day meeting brought together twelve participants to discuss the underlying causes of child well-being and develop an initial framework to consider the impact of structural factors on children’s lives and the inequalities that too often shape (and limit) their futures.
